Marymount SUMMER is offering enriching and inspiring opportunities for girls entering grades 6-9 from June 25-July 27.  Mornings are filled with academic enrichment, the latest in technology tools, and opportunities in the visual and performing arts.  Afternoons bring various choices in everything from cooking, photography, and graphic design to science, theatre, music, and fitness.  Girls will develop the necessary skills to be successful in the coming academic year and experience the joy of discovering new talents.  Girls will have fun and make new friends while enjoying an unparalleled level of instruction.  In the years since its founding, Marymount has built a program to challenge and inspire girls from across Los Angeles.  With a rigorous academic program, a dedication to service, and the expertise of teaching for girls, Marymount’s reputation as a top Catholic, independent girls high school is well-earned.  This mission and philosophy is alive in the Summer Programs as well, with the added desire and benefit of middle school girls having access to the advantages of a Marymount education during the summer.  Visit Marymount’s website to learn more about the Marymount SUMMER, summer.mhs-la.org.

Congratulations to the Marymount DTASC team and their advisor Mr. Chris Schulte for their excellent work at this past Saturday’s DTASC festival!! The DTASC Shakespeare Festival, held at Reseda high School, yielded exciting results for our girls. Three of the four scenes the students performed reached both the semi-finals and finals (an amazing accomplishment as Marymount was in the top ten out of sixty schools!) Congratulations to our 9th grade students who performed in the Large Group Category – 12th Night – who received a third place trophy award!

Max the wallaby was hopping all over Cantwell Hall yesterday to meet and greet students, and get a few snacks!

In celebration of Earth Day, Marymount students learned about the many creatures in the wild and how not to be afraid (even of black widow spiders!) Every living being has its purpose and the more we take care of our planet – by recycling, using less water, and more – we are taking care of these wonderful creatures!

Check back later today….we’re going Green and it will be wild!

Marymount High School has headed to the beach…and many other spectacular destinations…we’ll see you in mid-April!

Marymount’s 6th annual Model United Nations (MUN) conference, held last Saturday, March 24, 2012, highlighted the African continent. The conference theme, “Africa Rising,” allowed the six UN-style committees that were chaired by Marymount’s MUN advanced students to focus on contemporary issues in Africa such as the crisis in Somalia, water depletion and contamination, maternal and child health, genocide and disease control. Furthermore, the NATO committee enacted the historic 2010-11 crisis in Libya.

Approximately 140 students from nine schools around Southern California participated, including Loyola, Harvard-Westlake and Santa Margarita. Marymount delegates won four awards including the gavel (Best Delegate) in the African Union committee, taken by senior Ashley S. Freshman Anna W. won an Outstanding, while senior Lauren H. and sophomore Kaleigh H. both won Commendations. A total of 24 Marymount MUNers competed in all the committees.

Several Marymount teachers also participated as special guests, posing as investigative reporters delivering news bulletins or as witnesses to disease, genocide or drought. Marymount chairs also presented homemade videos with teacher actors simulating crisis situations in order to inspire their committees to find solutions to the pressing problems addressed in each committee.

Seniors Ashley S. and Vicky L. created the provocative video at Opening Ceremony.

The Guest Speaker was particularly relevant and engaging. Candace Schermerhorn, documentary filmmaker from Santa Barbara, presented a trailer of her film about the women’s protest movement against the multinational oil companies in the Niger Delta in Nigeria. She spoke compellingly about her inspiration for the documentary and its relation to the concerns and actions of MUN students. She also spent the entire day visiting every committee, interacting with the students.

Marymount’s MUN program will celebrate its 30th year in 2012 and present its 7th invitational conference in the spring of 2013. Over 50 students participate in the program every year, competing at six to eight conferences. This year they garnered a record-breaking 56 individual awards and for the fist time ever, not just one, but two “Outstanding School” awards! Next year, the MUN team plans to travel, for the first time, to the largest and most prestigious MUN conference in the country, Georgetown’s in Washington D.C.

The Marymount Alumnae Association held their Annual Easter Egg Hunt this past Sunday! With Easter baskets in tow, a group of children ages five and older and children four and younger had an Easter egg hunt around Marymount’s campus. There were also fun activities such as egg decorating, face painting, balloon twisting, photos with the Easter Bunny, a magical fairy show, and a petting zoo complete with chickens, goats, ducks and a bunny!  With delicious Easter treats and so many fun things to do, Marymount alumnae and their families enjoyed reconnecting and celebrating the upcoming holiday with friends and former classmates. Happy Spring!

A new school swim record was set on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at the swim meet against Marlborough.

Sophomore Tori L. broke the 200 Free record in a time of 2:19.03, eclipsing the mark set by Marymount alumna Taylor Bartholomew in 2009.

Congratulations Tori! Go Sailors!

Several classes of Marymount biology students walked across the street to UCLA and explored the Botanical Gardens as part of the plant unit this week.  While at the gardens, students used an iPad to find and photograph representatives of the major plant phyla and explore the several biomes represented in the gardens. Students had a great time and put their knowledge of plants to use!

The Marymount community is so proud of our Robotics team, Nautae! 21 Marymount girls grades 9 – 12 (and only one of two all-girls teams to compete!) represented Marymount this past weekend in the 2012 Los Angeles Regional FIRST Robotics Competition at the Long Beach Convention Center. The name of the game this year was “Rebound Rumble” with competition from two competing Alliances. Each Alliance consisted of three robots, who competed to score as many points by getting basketballs into the hoops as they could during a two-minute and 15 second match. There was also a Hybrid Period, where one robot on each Alliance was allowed to be controlled using a Microsoft Kinect. Team Nautae proudly attempted to score extra points each time an opportunity arose!

The Marymount team brought home the Imagery Award, given to the team who demonstrates inspirational dedication to art and illustration. It celebrates attractiveness in engineering and outstanding visual aesthetic integration from the machine to the team appearance.

GO TEAM NAUTAE!!!
