Congratulations to the cast & crew of “Oliver!” for their countless hours of rehearsals, set-design and building, costume creation, lighting and sound design, and more! The Marymount community of students, faculty, staff, administration, family members and friends enjoyed the weekend performances. Well done Marymount Players!
Congrats future Class of 2016! I can’t wait to meet and see all of you on campus! You’re all going to love Marymount. During my first week at Marymount, I worried about meeting boys. Then, I realized being at an all-girl’s school has a plus side and actually makes you feel much more confident and comfortable to speak your mind, act crazy with your friends, and feel better about your image. You’re free to do what you wouldn’t do if there were boys around. Don’t worry though, you’ll still meet plenty of boys! Get excited. Once freshman year starts the fun only begins! – Paula S. Class of 2015
I remember how exciting it was when I received my acceptance letter from Marymount just one year ago in the eighth grade. I opened up the envelope and out came silver and blue stars with the letter I’d been waiting for. I was so excited because in my hand was my very own, golden ticket to Marymount. It was my dream school all throughout the admission process, and finally, my dreams were going to be a reality! It was also one of my first acceptance letters, and getting it made me very happy! Congratulations to all of the newly admitted students, and I can’t wait to welcome my Sailor sisters into the Marymount community next year! Go class of 2016! – Raquel F., Class of 2015
The two AP Environmental classes at Marymount visited the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach on March 13th. The students first performed a lab where they took water, plankton, and sediment samples from the harbor outside the aquarium. Students performed chemical tests to determine pH, salinity, and nitrogen content as well as physical tests to determine water clarity and sediment composition.
After analyzing the results students discussed the human effects on the local ecosystem and how human developments impact a bay.
Students were then free to view the many marine ecosystems on display in the aquarium. The students especially enjoyed the sea otters and the jelly fish exhibits.
The AP Environmental students had a great time at the aquarium while learning about marine ecosystems!
Pi is the symbol for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Whatever the size of a circle, if you divide its circumference by its diameter you will always get 3.14159…, better known as pi.
Larry Shaw created Pi Day in 1988. The holiday was celebrated at the San Francisco Exploratorium, where Shaw worked as a physicist, with staff and public marching around one of its circular spaces, then consuming fruit pies. The Exploratorium continues to hold Pi Day celebrations. On Pi Day 2004, Daniel Tammet recited 2,964 decimal digits of π.
At Marymount, Pi Day is celebrated in a number of different ways. There is, of course, the obligatory eating of PIE or shaped cookies. Students can earn their piece of PIE by reciting to 7 numbers after the decimal point. If they can recite 10 numbers after the decimal point, they also receive a special pencil as a reward.
The Math Department also sponsors a competition to celebrate the day in which students submit original designs that incorporate the symbol . The winning designs are then made into buttons that students can collect and wear on the lapel of their Marymount blazer. Last year, the Math Department made buttons to order at the Spring Thing event (coming up next week!) and raised $500 for the Red Cross Tsunami Relief Fund. There will be a similar fund-raising effort again this year.
Of all the designs submitted this year, Mara Z., Class of 2012, Claire S., Class of 2014, Ashlie W., Class of 2013, Melia G., Class of 2012, and Addie B., Class of 2013 created the prize-winning designs. Addie also won the competition for the second year in a row with her creative and original design.
Happy Pi Day!!!
A junior and senior level physics class designed egg drop containers and dropped them from the High School building balcony last week. In their analysis of the project, students were required to synthesize material from units on energy, kinematics, dynamics, momentum and gravity. Check out the videos and photos!
Marymount enjoyed a musical and comedic treat during Community today, as we were entertained by the Yale Society of Orpheus & Bacchus. The SOBs are the second longest running a cappella group in the nation with 20 members. The group performed both in song and in jest, with great stories and tunes, and even left time for Q&A at the end! Lucky birthday girl Mara Z. even received birthday wishes from the group before heading back to class! Thank you to the gentlemen from Yale who performed for the Marymount community today!
Oliver! a British Musical, with script, music and lyrics by Lionel Bart is based upon the novel Oliver Twist, written by Charles Dickens. A celebration of service and community outreach was held at Marymount on Friday, March 9, 2012. The Class of 2013 shared their work, their dreams for the organizations they care about and the results of their efforts with the Marymount Community. Congratulations to the junior class on presenting such meaningful and inspiring work!
Congratulations to all the amazing girls who have been accepted to Marymount! The week before I received my acceptance letter I was very nervous I was not going to be admitted and all my friends kept telling me I was going to be fine, and that I would get in; but I was still nervous because I really wanted to be a Sailor! When I finally received my letter and discovered I had been admitted to Marymount, I screamed, jumped up and down, hugged everyone and teared up, and my parents were so proud of me. I was so honored and exhilarated to have been accepted into such an amazing and nourishing school. From my experiences, I know Marymount is such a stellar school and a place you will LOVE, which allows the girls to flourish within their first semester, in the classroom and in life. I feel I have been able to get to know almost everyone and everything about our community. The close familial community between all classes brings out the best in people and provides opportunities for leadership and continued growth. In our all-girls setting, I feel less worried about superficial things and find I can focus on the important things, like school work and friendships. Here, being yourself is all that matters. I love Marymount and being part of the Class of 2015, it has become my second home.
Congratulations future Marymount girls! – Anna W. Class of 2015

Missing a day of school at Marymount can be a difficult thing to do. You can end up missing important information; however, an amazing opportunity like this does not come around very often. I, along with several of my classmates, attended a Diversity Conference at Wildwood School on Wednesday. This conference was filled with a great deal of interesting information about women in history, media, relationships, differences between women, and much more. There were also a variety of guests and student performances including poetry readings, instrumental and singing performances, an amazing one-woman show and a showcase of beautiful artwork. This was a wonderful once-in-a-lifetime experience! – Gaby V. Class of 2014
Wow! Congratulations future freshmen!! I hope you are excited and looking forward to our coming years at Marymount. I remember receiving the big white envelope stuffed with navy & white confetti, and thinking “OH MY GOSH! I did it!!” It was one of the most exhilarating experiences I’ve had, despite the fact that I was so jittery I read the whole thing in a minute! I’m proud to be a Sailor, and I hope you are, or will be, too! – Jessie Z. Class of 2015
Please enjoy this video, created by current parent Blake Hottle, to get another glimpse into who the Marymount girl is today, and get a peek at the kind of person she will become!
Congratulations, Class of 2016! Your hard-work and dedication given to the application process has paid off. I remember the day I received my acceptance letter, I bawled my eyes out with tears of joy. Remembering back on that day, I am so happy I chose Marymount from all of the other wonderful options I had. At Marymount, I feel comfortable to be me around everyone, including my friends and teachers. Marymount is the place to be! – Irene K. Class of 2015
In celebration of our Marymount women, the community came together on Saturday night for “WOW – Watch our Women” Homeport 2012.
With performances from the Marymount Jazz/Rock Ensemble and the Marymount Players cast of “Oliver!” the evening began with a Silent Auction, Homeport party sign-ups and an opportunity to mingle with friends. After a delicious dinner served buffet-style with the help of Marymount students, the Live Auction kicked off with great items and enthusiasm from the crowd.
Our entire community of staff, faculty, parents, and special guests extend heartfelt thanks to the Homeport co-chairs, Denise DeSantis, Josephine Habiby and Jacki Shepherd for their tremendous efforts. The contributions of all the volunteers helped make the evening a special celebration!
The entire Marymount community congratulates you on your acceptance! We look forward to welcoming you to campus and we hope you enjoy celebrating this exciting accomplishment with your family and friends!
The AP Environmental Science class built solar cars from a kit and raced them on campus, near Senior Lawn, this morning. The students had 30 minutes to build and test the car with only the materials provided. The solar cars use energy from the sun collected on a photovoltaic panel which powers a motor, and then turns the wheels. The clear winner was team Tropical Coconutz! Enjoy the race!
